More About Us

Our Background:

Grandstaff FamilyThe farm was established in 1974 by Ben & Tamie Grandstaff. Raising four children, Jeremy, Crystal, Dustin & Corey, and continuing to build the horse business have been a lifetime vision for the couple. Ben and Tamie were involved in the 4-H program for 18 years and enjoy the opportunity the International Buckskin Circuit presents to travel and compete as a family, enjoying the friendships made along the way. Although Buckskin/Quarters are the Grandstaff color of choice, we also enjoy working in the Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse Racing Industry.

Our Vision:

Picture of Corey and SkipAnd now the dream comes true… After being involved in our own on farm breeding program for 17 years-we saw the need for a facility that would help the average horse owner with all their breeding management needs. In January 1999, S & G Stables opened their doors to a newly constructed Stallion and Mare Management Facility. Specializing in all aspects of the breeding program, we take pride in providing quality customer service, offering top-of-the-line stallion and mare care, artificial insemination, and shipping. With the breeding facility, boarding, conditioning, training, & sales, it is needless to say that the farm has become a full time job. As such, we are very proud of or work and give our best to insure our customers the highest quality & satisfaction possible in everything we do. You can be assured, as an S & G Stables customer, that quality care and going the extra "mile" is not something that we do occasionally; it is what we always consistently provide. That’s a promise!

DYNAMIC BREEZE

Introducing our latest addition to the color line-up!

imageimage

Dynamic Breeze is as remarkable in his color and personality as the story behind him. Foaled and raised on our farm “Beezer” has touched our hearts from day one. A difficult delivery gave him a traumatic entrance into this world and we lost his Momma 5 days later leaving him an orphan. Because of his presentation at birth he had severe digital hyper-extension of the back legs. He spent 2 weeks in splints and wraps to correct the legs but nothing was working. Our farrier, David Byler, suggested corrective shoes that were hot glued. For several months we had a standing ritual of Ben laying Beezer on his side, pulling off the outgrown shoes and David gluing on a new set. Needless to say it was an exhausting 45 minutes for all! It worked and soon he was able to follow his surrogate mother for turnout and run with the other foals. In a few short months, he transformed from a ugly duckling to a beautiful silver grulla with dun factor galore. Our partner and mare owner, Ava Gardner, gave the go ahead to take him to the OSBA Fall Futurities and a star was born! As a weanling he earned his ROM in Dun Factor. For the next year, we campaigned Dynamic Breeze for Ava in Dun Factor, Halter and Longe Line. In September he was leading the nation in IBHA Dun Factor, 4th in halter and 4th in Longe Line and had earned the IBHA 2008 World Show Dun Factor Title- then tragedy stuck again. At the MABA Fall Futurity - just 1 point away from his Dun Factor Superior, he slipped and fell in the warm up pen - when he got up he could not put any weight on his right front leg. We made a six hour haul from Indiana to Cleveland, Oh to get the diagnosis - a fractured scapula (shoulder). The question was - could he recover? Dr Berthold gave us a strict regiment of complete stall rest and supplements. After 90 days x-rays showed some improvement and the fracture healing - at that point he was sound enough to attend a spring show to gain his remaining dun factor point needed for his superior. The rest of the 2009 show season was spent with him continuing the healing process and we bred two of our best color mares to him. In the fall of 2009, he started light training under saddle with Robin Murphy and our fears turned into reality, his injury would prevent him from returning to the ring for any riding events. He would return back to the farm to spend his days as a sire and do light trial riding. In 2012 we will open him up to outside mares, with special consideration to proven producers. We offer a multiple mare discount and a color guarantee. AQHA Incentive Fund

More about Bronzed to Beat:

Bronzed To Beat was bred to be, not just a show horse, but a sire. He was not an accident. He was created by a careful selective process. His pedigree is filled with champions and leading sires. The product comes from the seed, champions produce champions.
His sire, Color Me Skip, had an extensive show record. He was a Reserve World Champion Halter Stallion, an AQHA Champion with both Superiors in halter and western pleasure. He also earned points in barrels and poles. He is an AQHA Leading Sire of Halter Point Earners. As well as his record, he was chosen for his superior conformation and structure that was made for both beauty and soundness. Conformation that would stand up to use.
Bronze’s dam, Ribbons Heart Beat, was purchased at the Birdtail Ranch of Simms Montana, who are all time AQHA Leading Breeders of AQHA Champions and ROM performance horses. She had the gorgeous buckskin color I wished to propagate, the sound structure, and a pedigree filled with horses that had proven to excel as show horses, successful in a number of events, and who had also proven their ability to pass these traits to their get.
These horses were also well known for their “born broke” dispositions. Horses that were so gentle and smart that youth and amateur could train them. Ribbons’ sire, Ribbon Page, was an AQHA Champion, with points earned in halter, western pleasure, western riding and reining. Her dam, Miss Heart Beat was a ROM producer and sired by Hard To Beat, Honor Roll Halter Horse and AQHA Champion. Ribbons was specifically selected to be a mate with Color Me Skip. Both of these horses had a special look. A look of elegance and beauty. The Look Of Eagles.
Bronzed To Beat was everything I wished from that mating. He was started toward his show career as a yearling, but a freak accident occurred which gave him a permanent injury to his right front pastern. An injury which nearly ended his possibility of a show career and did prevent him from having a riding performance career. Bronze began his halter career at age six, an age at which most horses are ending, not beginning, their halter careers. The fact that we could take a aged stud to his first show at this age, speaks for the quality of his disposition. He went to his first IBHA show on Labor Day weekend. He was shown at just four show circuits that year. It was tough to acquire halter points because there was often not enough aged stallions to get points, but he won them by going Grand Champion. In just four weekends, he earned thirteen halter points and third place on the IBHA Honor Roll against other horses who had been shown the whole season. He came within one point of winning Reserve Honor Roll. The next year he stood to his first book of mares. After breeding season he was shown at just enough shows to get him from the breeding attitude to the showing attitude before being shown at the IBHA World Show. He placed fourth there. All the stallions placing above him had previously been World Champions. He acquired another seven halter points for a total of twenty and his ROM.  He was then retired from showing. He had proven what I had set out to do by showing him, that he had the quality to be competitive and win.
In 2002, he was returned to the show ring, just to show his support for the Ohio Buckskins Association’s Red, White and Blue Circuit. We took him directly from the breeding shed to the show. At eleven years old we were not expecting to win. He did, in aged stallion classes of up to seven entries. He was Circuit Champion Aged Stallion and acquired six more halter points, for a total of twenty six points. How many aged halter studs could be returned to the showring at age eleven and win? Especially in this age of halter horses which are crippled before they are mature and die young.
Bronze’s greatest accomplishments are as a sire. He is A PROVEN SIRE, of Superior Halter, ROM, and futurity winners in AQHA, IBHA, ABRA, and PHBA. He has sired three IBHA Honor Roll Winners and one Reserve Honor Roll Winner, and has World Show placed get in halter and performance. His get have proven to both halter and ride. All of his winning get have been shown to their titles by amateurs and youth. All this from a relative few shown get and produced from mares who mostly had no show or produce record.

Bronzed has been fertility tested as excellent. He has foals across the US that have been conceived by shipped semen.

Coax Me Chad

AN OHIO ICON Retires!

imageIt has been an honor and pleasure to have Coax Me Chad on our farm the past 9 years. Chad had such great personality and history. One of the last of his kind. Chad will spend his retirement with Wally & Laura Burress in Kentucky. Wally was the assistant trainer for Chad during his racing career and is happy to have Chad in his keep again.

imageA big thanks to the many mare owners over the years that have booked with Chad, keep in touch and let us know what his babies are up to.

imageIf you are going to Churchill Downs, visit the Derby Museum where the ‘84 Kentucky Derby mural of Chad chasing down the great “Swale” is displayed on the wall. Be sure to replay the 1984 Kentucky Derby and watch Coax Me Chad’s “Run For The Roses"(Requires Windows Media Player)
